LEAGUE OVERVIEW
The Massachusetts Credit Union League is the oldest continually operating trade group in the United States. While proud of its heritage, the League is focused on meeting the needs of its member credit unions today and into the future. The League's mission statement is simply put, "To Preserve, Promote, and Protect Credit Unions." By staying in constant contact with the people who lead the credit unions of Massachusetts and by paying careful attention to the environment that credit unions operate in, the League is able to fulfill that mission.
The League serves the credit union community by providing direct support and through public, legislative and regulatory advocacy. The major functional areas are Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy, Marketing and Public Advocacy, Professional Development, and Business Solutions. Within each of these areas there are a wide variety of services offered to credit unions. The services that are available are detailed in separate sections of this website accessible through links that appear on the left navigation bar on each page.
GOVERNANCE
The League, like credit unions, is a democratically controlled cooperative with a board of directors elected by and from its membership. Each of the League's fifteen directors is a member of the board of an affiliated Massachusetts credit union or an active employee of an affiliated Massachusetts credit union. The Board sets policy for the League and directs its staff. A number of committees operate in accordance with the by-laws of the League. They deliberate on matters of importance to member credit unions and provide the League board with valuable information and insight regarding how best to provide value to member credit unions. CHAPTERS
Chapters have always played a significant role in providing leadership, education, and networking opportunities within the Massachusetts credit union movement. The chapters give credit union officials and staff the opportunity to meet regularly, get to know each other, and exchange ideas that help them make their individual credit unions better. In addition to providing educational and networking opportunities, the chapters have done a great deal to further the cause of credit unions throughout the years. Chapters are instrumental in fostering grassroots political involvement, supporting community programs, and reaching out to the youth of the Commonwealth through scholarship programs.
